North York Moors Steam Railway
Beautifully preserved steam locomotives
operate on this picturesque train line,
running from Whitby to Pickering. The service
runs regularly in high season and is a great
way to experience the spectacular North York
Moors landscape in comfort.

Whitby to Scarborough Trailway
The disused railway line between Whitby
and Scarborough has now become a scenic
traffic free cycle and walkers route between
the two towns. Roughly 20 miles in total, it’s
a good day out and takes in some beautiful
coastal villages en route. Bikes can be hired
at Hawsker’s old rail station, only about a mile
from the cottage.

Cleveland Way walking route
The cottage is a perfect base for a number
of local walks which pass close by. You’ll be
able to pick up walking maps to guide you
from the tourist information centre in Whitby.
The Cleveland Way passes through the town
and takes in a total of 109 miles of coast and
moorland connecting the local seaside resorts.
Try walking the stretch south to Robin Hoods
Bay, or north to Sandsend.

Boat trips
During high season, you can catch pleasure
boats from Whitby Harbour out to sea,
or along the coast towards Staithes.

Fishing trips
Both experienced and novice anglers can
book trips out to sea on one of the chartered
fishing boats available in Whitby. Have

Canoe and rowing boat hire
If you’d rather stick to smaller boats, the pretty
village of Ruswarp is only a short walk from
the cottage, and offers a canoe and rowing
boat hire service to explore the River Esk.
There is also a small boating lake on the west
Cliff of Whitby, which is good for children.

Golf
There are a number of golf courses in the
local area, the closest of which is Whitby Golf
Course which offers spectacular views over
the bay. Non members are welcome and able
to book day events.

Surfing
Some of the best surfing spots on the East
Coast are to be found locally, in the villages of
Staithes and Sandsend just North of Whitby.

forests, with horses and ponies available
